When someone gets hurt or sick, families often have to choose how to help them get better. Sometimes, that means finding a special place for care. Two common places are rehab centers and nursing homes. But what’s the difference?
What is a Rehab Center?
A rehab center (also called a skilled nursing facility, or SNF) is a place where people go to recover and get stronger after being sick, hurt, or having surgery. People usually stay there for a short time (2-4 weeks on average). They get help from nurses, doctors, and therapists. The goal is to help them get better so they can safely return home.
Example: If someone breaks a bone or has a big surgery, they might go to a rehab center to do exercises and regain their strength and balance.
What is a Nursing Home?
A nursing home is a place for people who need help every day for an extended time (possibly for the rest of their lives). The helpers in a nursing home take care of things like eating, bathing, dressing, and taking medicine. Many people in nursing homes stay there because they can’t live safely by themselves.
How Are They Different?

- Length of Stay: Rehab stays are usually short (up to 2-4 weeks, on average). Nursing home stays can be longer (months) or even permanent.
- Goal: Rehab centers provide medical treatment to help people get strong enough to go home. Nursing homes provide both medical treatment AND daily care support to help people who need daily care for a long time. The goal in a nursing home is safety and quality of life.
How to Pick the Right One
Think about what you or your loved one needs:
- If you need short-term, temporary help getting strong after an illness or injury, a rehab center might be best.
- If you need ongoing help every day with things like eating, dressing, bathing, getting into or out of a chair or bed, using the bathroom, or taking medications - and you don’t expect this to improve with treatment - a nursing home could be a better fit.
It’s important to ask your physician or primary care provider for guidance on the care setting that is best matched to your loved one’s needs.
What to Remember
Rehab centers provide skilled care like physical, occupational, and speech therapies, to help people get better so they can go home. Nursing homes provide long-term care for people who need daily assistance and cannot care for themselves.
